CHAPTER 21

Soren followed the Marines back through the corridors, still wondering about the potential implications of the vortex cannons. As they approached the officer’s lounge where he had left Lukas, he couldn’t wait to share his idea with the scientist.

The door slid open, revealing Lukas still hunched over his datapad, seemingly oblivious to the passage of time. He looked up as Soren entered, blinking rapidly as if coming out of a trance.

“Ah, Captain,” Lukas said. “Back already? How did it go?”

“We made some progress,” Soren replied. “It’s time to go.”

“Oh. Already?” Lukas hopped to his feet, and they fell into step behind the Marines.

“I have a question for you,” Soren said as they walked. “What do you know about the vortex cannons and their effect on spacetime?”

Lukas glanced at him. “I think I know what you’re thinking, Captain. Yes, the cannon does affect spacetime, as you saw when we were in the Eye. But its disruptive energy is actually pretty minimal compared to something like a space fold. The main difference is that the cannon focuses the disruption in a specific manner. Technically very complex to do, but mathematically simple to explain.”

Soren felt a pang of disappointment. “Darn. I thought I might have been onto something. The SF has similar weapons, and I wondered if they could be connected to the Convergence somehow.”

Lukas shook his head. “I’m afraid not, Captain. Unless they have…say, a thousand of them firing at once, they aren’t capable of causing the kind of instability we’re seeing. It was a good thought, though. Dana and I eliminated the possibility soon after we learned about the weapon. With Tashi’s help, of course.”

“I see,” Soren said, trying not to let his frustration show. “Worth asking about, anyway.”

“How did the planning session with the Admiral go?” Lukas asked again. “Did you learn anything useful?”

“It went well,” Soren replied. “We’ve agreed to a joint operation against an SF space station. I’ll brief the team on the details once we’re back on the Wraith. But I think it’s a solid plan, and it could help us solidify our alliance in this dimension.”

“I just hope we can get more information from the FUP’s spies,” Lukas said. “We may gain allies, but they won’t help if we can’t find the source of the Eye.”

“I know. And I agree. By gaining access to a network of operatives, we’ve expanded our search radius and velocity significantly.”

Lukas laughed. “Now you’re sounding like a mathematician, Captain. I must be rubbing off on you.”

They entered the hangar, where the same shuttle that had brought them waited. As they boarded, Soren couldn’t help but feel relieved. He had enjoyed spending time with this dimension’s Jane, planning the mission, but he was glad to be heading back to his ship and crew.

The trip back to the Wraith took only a few minutes. As the shuttle’s hatch opened, Soren saw a familiar face waiting for them. Dana stood in the hangar, a smile breaking across her face as she saw her father and Lukas emerge unharmed.
